Abstract Implementing urban green spaces is considered as one of the ways of achieving sustainable urban development. Cairo is having a green space area of 1.5 m2/capita, which is too low according to the WHO. On the other hand, there are brownfield sites in Greater Cairo Region that comprise an area of 2,484,305 m2. Brownfields have a great potential for greening the city through establishing green open spaces on its sites. However, selecting and prioritizing high potential brownfield sites is essential for the strategic use of these limited resources. There are different projects of greening brownfield sites worldwide, but they were ad-hoc projects, they were established without a systematic approach for selecting those brownfield sites. Therefore, this research is concerned with constructing a systematic categorization process of brownfield sites to be transformed into green areas. |
