Abstract

Some local weight gain formulas have been increasingly used in
recent years based on the information of their popularity in local markets
for gaining weight. Therefore , this study was conducted to examine the
sensory and biological evaluation and nutritional content of some local
prepared formulas (Mafataka, Gharaz El-Bakar, Tahoija El-kortas El-Abid)
on body weight status, by using experimental animals to know their
efficacy in case oflong-term consumption (8 weeks).by using experimental
animals. Forty tow adult male albino rats that weighing (1l0±5) were
divided into seven groups (6 rats each), group (1) was fed on basal diet and
kept as a control group, groups (2 and 3) were fed on basal diet
supplemented with formula (1) ”Mafataka”, at the level of 10% and 15 %
respectively. Groups (4 and 5) fed on basal diet supplemented with formula
(2) ”Gharaz El-Bakar”, at the level of 10% and 15 % respectively. Groups
(6 and 7) were fed on basal diet supplemented with formula (3) ”Tahoija
El-kortas El-Abid” at the level of 10% and 15 % respectively. The chemical
composition of studied formula Mafataka, Kharaz El-Bakar and Tahoija El-
kortas El-Abid provides a caloric value 337.01, 346.44 and 395.7
K.cal/l00g dried sample respectively. The results indicated the body
weight gain percent and feed efficiency ratio were increased significantly
(P<0.05) in rats fed on different formulas, compared to the control group.
Significant increase (P<0.05) in the levels of haematological parameters
and leptin hormone were observed, however, there is no significant changes
in liver and kidney functions were observed for the studied formula,
compared to the control group. The sensory evaluation indicated that all
formula were accepted in all evaluated parameter with a significant
differences. Conclusion: these fmdings indicate that Mafataka, Kharaz El-
Bakar and Tahoija El-kortas El-Abid may be used for human especially
underweight individuals to stimulate appetite and enhance weight gain
effectively.
