Abstract

This study is dedicated to investigate mysteries in The lost Army of Cambyses (2002) by Paul Sussman (1966-2012) and The Da Vinci Code (2003) by Dan Brown (1964-). The study is based on the hypothesis that the ―Female‖ reader is satisfied with the mysteries in both novels and that Dan Brown is influenced in one way or another by Paul Sussman’s technique in The Lost Army of Cambyses (2002) in creating and resolving mysteries in his novel The Da Vinci Code (2003).
The study aims to scrutinize the female reader‘s reception of the mysteries in each novel. The reader response theory and findings of previous research tackling the female reading strategies are applied to the two novels to see how the different reading strategies influenced the female reception of the mysteries. The study analyzes the use of mysteries in both novels as well as the female reader‘s communication with and reception of those mysteries. Additionally, it offers an analysis of female readers‘ reviews of the novels guided by the reader response theory. Moreover, the study aims to prove that Brown has been influenced by Paul Sussman in creating his novel and that the similarities between the two novels are not the result of following the conventions of the mystery genre. Thus, the present study offers a bipartite comparison; aiming to compare the mysteries and the female reception of them in both novels.
The study findings are concluded in the fact that female readers‘ reading strategies highly influence their enjoyment of the genre. The analysis yielded the results that the female reader tends to react emotionally to characters, therefore, they usually identify with the detective. Moreover, her sharp ability of inference and paying attention to hidden messages in texts makes her expect the solutions of mysteries. Consequently, the female reader has a sense of accomplishment. Moreover, the findings yielded that the similarities between the novels transcend the conventions of the mystery genre.
