Abstract Obesity is a result of a disturbance affecting the metabolic homeostasis where excessive food consumption is accompanied with inadequate activity. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a common metabolic disorder evidenced by pancreatic islet β-cell failure and hyperglycemia. It constitutes a leading public health problem all over the word accompanied by several complications such as cardiovascular, cerebral, neurological, and renal complications. Recently, herbal plants and their extracts have been widely investigated as an alternative or supportive agent over drugs in the treatment against different diseases including T2DM. These herbal supplements have the advantage of being generally non-toxic. This study was carried out to investigate the hypoglycemic effect of a medicinal plant (Gum Arabic) and hypoglycemic chemical drug (Dapagliflozin) in HFHS diet induced diabetes in rats. This investigation was conducted by determination of glycemic index (blood glucose and insulin levels), HOMA (HOMA-IR and HOMA-β), lipid profile (TL, TAG, TC, LDL-c, HDL-c and VLDL-c), and gene expression of some genes to clarify the mechanism of action of the tested medications. Therefore, the following parameters were determined: I. Glycemic index, which included: Assessment of fasting blood glucose. |
