Abstract

Communication based on Internet Protocol (IP) has become the dominant communication technique nowadays. Although the IP networks have many benefits, they are still subject to many challenges. In the modern networks and the expected next-generation networks, the IP infrastructure is expected to carry multiple kinds of traffic serving different end users’ applications. This difference is most significant in the traffic nature and behavior. The traffic tolerance to certain types of distortion or interruption is also considered as an important factor when categorizing the applications in the perspective of their traffic nature and characteristics. For instance, it has been stated and proved that video traffic is more bursty in contrary to voice, which has a constant amount of traffic in the most coding technologies, and it depends on the technique used and the voice quality required. On the other hand, although both video and voice are known to be very sensitive to the Jitter (which is the difference in the delay), the normal data transmissions is not so sensitive to this delay – in most cases – or the difference of the amount of delay from one moment to another as they are non-realtime and can tolerate a little bit of being queued. This is attributed to the nature of these kinds of applications concerned with moving a file or a piece of data from one point to another in a relatively accepted time (for example, the Internet surfing user will not feel a delay of one second when opening a page while this delay can cause a significant inconvenience if existing in a phone call). In order to have a converged network that is serving all these kinds of different applications with their different characteristics, some performance enhancement techniques should be adopted to guarantee that each application gets the required treatment that suits its needs. In this thesis the Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are tested to carry voice traffic and multiple performance enhancement techniques are tested to give the voice the better throughput and better Delay and Jitter.
