Abstract This study investigates the interrogative style in the prophetic Hadith from a pragmatic perspective and to inspect the exposure of the peculiarity of its real and metaphorical uses within the framework of the interlocution in the prophetic Hadith in the books of (al buḵ ãrĩ and riyãd-al-ṣ alhĩn). It seeks to analyze and demonstrate a pragmatic analysis and mechanisms with a focus on the speech acts and pragma dialectical approach in an attempt to reveal the innermost of the interrogative style as well as the purposes of its interlocutive usage in the Hadith in arriving at the intended meaning. The researcher also attempts to scientifically show how the pragmatic discipline considers the speech acts and pragma dialectical approach as strategies to contribute largely to showing the purposes of interrogation as well as highlighting the value of interrogative style of communication, influence, persuasion, discipline and other interlocutive objectives. The hypothesis of the study is that, the prophetic traditions as related to asking and answering questions do not only depend on the linguistic aspect but also stretch to pragmatic messages. This research is a descriptive qualitative which applies two model of analysis, for the analysis of speech acts this study applies the rules set by a model synthesizing both Austin’s and Searle’s models that were adopted by Bach and Harnish (1979) for certain types of speech acts. To analyse the argumentative dialogue between the Prophet and his Companions, pragmadialectical approach by Van Eemeren (1992) is applied. Thirty six Hadiths are considered and interrogative styles identified in the prophetic Hadith are analyzed using the principles of speech acts and pragma dialectical approach. Consequently the importance of the context of the situation, including the sociocultural elements, values, religious beliefs, intention, discourse analysis and settings in which the Hadith was originally delivered are found to be of necessity in order to interpret the meaning of Hadith . The results also indicated that the Prophet used interrogative style for teaching, comprehending and interpreting the rules of allãh’s legal (Islamic legislations) easily and simply. |
