Abstract

Summary Multiple sclerosis is a common autoimmune inflammatory demyelinating diseaseof CNS, which affects females twice as often as males, mainly during the third and fourth decades. MS is a disease of immense complexity, with heterogeneity shown in clinical, pathological and immunological features leading to recent debate into whether it is a single disease or a syndrome with different etiologies (Confavreux et al, 2006). Ferritin is a positive acute phase protein, so its upregulation in our patients with MS, and especially in those with active disease, is indicative of the marked inflammation process(LeVine SM et al,2002). Prolactin affects the severity of inflammatory reactions. They also have effects on the immune system. Secretion of hormones by thehuman pituitary displays heterogeneity as a function of gender, age and race (Zhan and Desiderio, 2003). The aim of this work was to assess the serum level of ferritin and prolactin in patients with RRMS and to verify if there is any role regarding disease activity.
