Abstract

―Chapter Of this thesis is dedicated to the exploration of the main concepts of Eco‘s
interpretative semiotics and to explain why it is significant to apply it to literature. In addition to
this, concepts like ‗sign‘, ‗code‘, ‗naïve reader‘, ‗critical reader‘, ‗textual ation‘,
‗encyclopedia‘ and ‗over-interpretation‘ are explained. In ―Chapter Two‖, the researcher
conducts an analysis of Eco‘s The Name of the Rose, identifying the main concepts of
interpretative semiotics in the text. In addition to this, signs and codes in the novel are
deciphered to figure out the way time is presented by Eco. ―Chapter Three‖ presents a semiotic
analysis of the concept of time in Ackroyd‘s novel Hawksmoor, as well as comparing it to the
previous analysis of The Name of the Rose. Finally, in the ―Conclusion‖ the author summarizes
the main steps and results of the interpretation of signs related to the representation of time in the
two postmodern novels. This study is, therefore, about the representation of the concept of time in postmodern detective fiction and the methodology used is the application of the Eco‘s interpretative semiotics on the main signs of the two novels The Name of the Rose and Hawksmoor.
