Abstract

The design community in Egypt neglected environmental design considerations and strategies such as shading, orientation, massing, thermal mass, natural ventilation, and daylighting and have been replaced by active mechanical design strategies. This takes place in spite of the high rates of energy consumption due to changes in successive economic and social development and because of climatic change. Electricity use in buildings is a key energy consumer. Energy use in office buildings in hot climates revealed that air-conditioning and electric lighting are the most two largest consumers. Moreover, using sustainable architecture design strategies specifically daylighting could reduce lighting energy. However, this may have an indirect impact on the HVAC energy requirements especially in cooling-dominated buildings in a hot climate. In the light of this matter, the aim of this thesis is to use the daylight stratigies for sustainable architecture design , and to reduce the energy consumption by having a balance between beneficial natural light and excessive solar heat; and therefore reducing the energy consumption. Another objective is to put clear guidelines for the architects; helping them in enhancing the sustainable building designs in Egypt For such reasons, the methodology proposed in the present work is making a comparative analysis. The analysis compares the results of several windows studies obtained from a daylighting simulation called (diva) that works with a 3D design program (rhino). It will study window size (window to wall ratio); each with a different building orientation, window different glazing materials , and window shape design (vertical and horizontal). The dynamic daylighting metrics that will be used in the simulation study are ”the Daylight Autonomy” and ”the Annual Energy Consumption”. To meet a good daylighting autonomy for the window size the results from the simulation study; using a reference office show that: In north-facing walls, windows size can be reasonably large while in east and west or south-facing walls windows should be smaller. All desigs are taking in consideration the weather data of the building location which was a hot to moderate climate (Alexandria, Egypt). Also, different types of window glazing can control the thermal heat gain and reduce the energy consumption. However, it can prevent the beneficial daylighting amount in case of choosing the inappropriate glazing type. Importantly, the came out guidelines help in having the appropriate daylighting and chosing the suitable glazing material. Finally, the window shape design doesn’t have any impact on saving energy. It only changes the daylighting distribution but keeping the same amount.
