Abstract

Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is minimally invasive thoracic surgery that does not use a formal thoracotomy incision. VATS provides adequate visualization despite limited access to the thorax, allowing the procedure to be performed in patients who are debilitated or have marginal pulmonary reserve (Petersen et al., 2017).
VATS is principally employed in the management of pulmonary, mediastinal, and pleural pathology. Its main benefit has been the avoidance of a thoracotomy incision, which allows a shorter operating time, less postoperative morbidity, and earlier return to normal activity than can be achieved with thoracotomy (Petersen et al., 2017).
Preoperative education is an important component of preparing patients for surgery. Preoperative anxiety is one of the most important problems for patients, because it causes emotional and psychiatric problems as well as physical problems and associated with several pathophysiological responses such as hypertension and dysrhythmias, which can increase perioperative morbidity (Bell et al., 2019).
Surgical technique and treatment strategies for thoracic surgical patients continue to evolve. Nurses, as one of the essential members of the healthcare teams, need to grow and go forward together as well. Thoracic nursing team works closely together with other healthcare professionals and provides quality care to patients suffering from thoracic diseases. Nursing management was proven to be a cost-effective approach in providing holistic care (Yeung, 2016).
Quasi experimental research design was utilized to conduct this study. This study was carried out in cardiothoracic surgery department at Assiut university hospital. Sixty adult male and female patients undergoing thoracoscopic surgery assessed using tool I, II and III.
The following tools were utilized for data collection: first tool ”An interview questionnaire sheet for patients ”, second tool ”Designed educational nursing protocol” and third tool ”World Health Organization Quality Of Life ”. Data was collected and analyzed using necessary statistical manipulation
The main findings of the present study were:-
1- More than half of the study patients (53.3%) and more than one third of the control patients (33.3%) their age ranged from (18-29 years). About two thirds of both groups (study 63.3% and control 66.7%) were male. More than half of patients in both groups were married. As regarding to level of education the highest percentage in study group (36.7%) were highly educated and in control group (33.3%) were not educatedجراحة منظار الصدر هى وسيلة للنظر فى الرئتين والانسجة الاخرى حيث يقوم الطبيب بوضع تليسكوب صغير وادوات جراحية من خلال فتحات صغيرة فى الصدر
