Abstract

Epilepsy is one of the most common serious neurological disorders. About 50 million people worldwide have epilepsy.
Epilepsy is a disease of the brain defined by any of the following conditions:
At least two unprovoked (or reflex) seizures occurring >24 h apart.
One unprovoked (or reflex) seizure and a probability of further seizures similar to the general recurrence risk (at least 60%) after two unprovoked seizures, occurring over the next 10 years.
Diagnosis of an epilepsy syndrome.
Epilepsy’s annual incidence rate is 40–70 per 100,000 in industrialized countries and 100–190 per 100,000 in resource - poor countries.
Approximately 75% of epilepsy begins during childhood, reflecting the heightened susceptibility of the developing brain to seizures.
Seizures are classified into focal onset, generalized onset, and unknown onset.
The aim of the present study was to study the incidence of epilepsy among children attending the Neurology Clinic at AUCH in 2018.
This study site was epilepsy Outpatient Clinic in AUCH which is a tertiary referral center offering services not only for Alexandria citizens but also to neighboring governorates.
The study was conducted on 88 epileptic children attended the pediatric Outpatient Neurology Clinic in Alexandria University Children’s hospital from 1/1/2018 till 31/12/2018.
The data to be taken included: age, sex, residence, consanguinity, family history of epilepsy, occurrence of febrile convulsions, NICU admission, and other medical or neurological conditions. A detailed history about seizure occurrence in the patients was taken including age of onset of seizures, frequency of the attacks, type of seizure occurring, investigations done, treatment received and control of seizures.
Results of our thesis were as follow:
1- The incidence of epilepsy among children attended the Outpatient Neurology Clinic was 16.4%.
2- The mean age of cases with epilepsy in the present study was 4.9±2.9. 33% of cases began at age from 1- 3years, 60.2% began at age from 3-10 years, 6.8% of seizures began at age >10 years.
3- Moreover ,52.3% cases were females, 47.7% were males which is statically insignificant.
4- In the present study 61.4% of cases came from urban areas while 38.6 % came from rural areas which has on significance statistically.
5- In this study 45.5% of cases had positive family history of epilepsy. 25% of parents of epileptic cases were consanguineous.
- NICU admission reported in 22.7% of cases.
