Abstract Dimensions of concrete gravity dams are studied when subjected to seismic forces and the following conclusions are made: To construct small dams, so that stresses at toe and heel almost compression, the ratio between base width and dam height may be not less than 0.85. Increasing downstream slope of low dams and decreasing upstream one, with constant base width, resulted less compression stresses at toe and minimum tensile stresses at heel. The safe relative base width of high dams can be taken 0.93. It is better to construct high dams with downstream slope and vertical upstream face , because downstream slope is effective in reduction tensile stresses at heel than that constructed in upstream , with respect to constant base width . As in the studied case referred to get almost compression stress or at least zero tension, the ratio between dam widths to dam height is 0.9. While in the conclusion of the present work this value is 0.93. |
