Abstract The present work was performed to study the effect of pomegranate peel extract in healthy and carbon tetrachloride toxicated female albino rats. The present study was applied on (80) healthy female albino rats. They were divided into four equal groups each of 20 rats. group (1) the normal control group which administrated saline (negative control). group (2), rats were given pomegranate peel extract at a dose of 200 mg/kg b.wt orally daily for 10 weeks. group (3) was given Ccl4 orally twice a week for 6 weeks to induce toxicity at a dose of 1 ml/kg b.wt (50% Ccl4 in corn oil). group (4) Rats given pomegranate peel extract for 10 weeks and Ccl4 was administrated after the administration of pomegranate by 4 weeks until the end of experiment. Blood sample was collected at the end of 3rd and 6th weeks post Ccl4 treatment from medial canthus of the eye and divided into two parts. The first in plain test tube for serum separation for biochemical tests and the second sample was collected on EDTA for hematological examination. Liver and kidney specimens were taken at the end of 3rd and 6th week post Ccl4 each in two containers, the first in buffer saline for homogenization and kept in deep freeze at -20◦c and the second in neutral buffered formalin for histopathologyical examination. Rats of group (1) were normal along the experiment with no mortality. Rats in group (2) were seemed to be normal during the experimental period with no mortality. Rats in group (3) showed anorexia, depression and loss of body weight with 20% mortality rate. Rats in group (4) exhibited improvement of appetite and body weight with 5% mortality rate. |
