Abstract This work was conducted at agricultural field stations of three randomly chosen districts (Shebin El-Kom, El-Bagour and Menouf) out of the ten districts at Menoufia governorate to study some health disorders among adolescent females environmentally exposed to pesticides. This study included an exposed group of (100) adolescent females who accepted to participate in addition to a control (unexposed) group (50). Both groups were volunteers. They were matched for age, residence, income and educational level. The exposed and the controls were interviewed using a predesigned questionnaire about pesticides’ exposure and associated clinical manifestations. Neurobehavioral tests were carried out for both groups aiming to assess neurobehavioral performance along with medical and neurological screening exams and specific neurological tests for sensory and motor functions including; cranial nerves, sensory and motor system and reflexes. Spirometric measurements were performed to assess ventilatory functions. Also, Blood samples were collected to measure serum AChE, blood indices, liver and renal functions to assess the impact of exposure to pesticides on the blood cells forming process and functions of the liver and the kidney. Study results showed that the exposed group had a significantly lower neurobehavioral performance, a higher prevalence of neurological symptoms and signs and lower levels of serum AChE compared to the control group. The exposed group had significantly abnormal blood, liver and kidney functions measurements. |
