Abstract
The notion of translation is no longer confined to the transfer of information from one language to another in the written mode; it has been stretched and expanded to embrace various forms of language transfer in various modes. Audiovisual translation (AVT) emerged as a form of translation and established its place in the field of Translation Studies. With the advancement in cognitive psychology and the interest in unraveling the complexity of the human mind‘s ability to transfer, receive and interpret information, translation in its different forms has been studied in light of the theory of communication and cognition proposed by Sperber and Wilson (1986/1995), which is known as Relevance Theory (RT). Subtitling, being the most popular form of AVT, has been recently studied from the perspective of RT. However, the issue of the quality of subtitling has not been thoroughly researched in light of this theory. Therefore, this research attempts to study and assess the quality of subtitling Arabic films into English, which is an instance of upstream subtitling. It also tests the validity of the hypothesis that subtitling into English—the global hegemonic language—displays a high degree of domestication. It finally concludes that RT is a feasible and reliable tool for the quality assessment of subtitling.
