Abstract

The study sheds light on the challenges that fansubbers face while mediating cultural products such as rap songs which originate from the African American culture between the African American culture and the Arab culture. Fansubbers who are usually language proficient and culturally competent individuals tend to navigate multiple linguistic and cultural currents as they move between the source language/culture and the target language/culture. However, accepting the role of a cultural mediator, rap culture in specific, can be considered as a challenge for the Arab fansubber. Rap culture is known as the mirror of the African American culture taking into account both sides, the good and the bad. Being a fan her\himself, the fansubber tends to know the cultural needs of the rap music Arab fans.
Fansubbers as intercultural mediators take part in bridging the gap between rap music, which originates from the African American culture, and the Arab culture. Therefore, the researcher adopts a descriptive approach during the analysis of the corpus, which is made up of screenshots captured from the Arabic fansubbed videos of rap songs. The corpus of this study is sectioned according to Delia Chiaro’s (2009) classification and the analysis is conducted by applying Diaz Cintas & Ramael (2007) classification for translating culture-related problems
