Abstract The current study aimed to identify the etiology of exudative pleural effusions in Suez Canal University Hospitals and which method gives a higher diagnostic yield and has less complication rate than the other; closed pleural biopsy (blind and image-guided) or thoracoscopy. The study was carried out on 2 groups of patients with exudative pleural effusion. The first group (n= 30 cases); for whom thoracoscopic pleural biopsies were done. The second group (n= 30 cases); for whom pleural biopsies were done using Abrahms’ needle followed by tru-cut needle pleural biopsies under US guidance or repeated Abrahms’ needle biopsies (when indicated). The clinical profiles, diagnostic yields that had been obtained on histopathology, further investigations according to individual patient circumstances, complications and durations of hospital stay of the 2 groups were compared. |
