Abstract

Antibiotics are among the most commonly prescribed drugs all over the globe. They account for nearly 24% of all new and repeat prescriptions each year. Pediatric age group are among the most vulnerable population groups to contact illnesses and manifest side effects of drugs due to differences in pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetics. The overuse and misuse of antibiotics, infact, represent key factors in increasing bacterial resistance The study included 1000 child admitted in pediatric in-patient departments out of them 701(70.1%) patient had prescriped antibiotics. Most of the hospitalized Pediatric patients with antibiotics prescription belonged to age group of 1 month to 11 months. The percentage of male and female patients was 58.6% and 41.4%, respectively Almost 76.2% of the antibiotics were given parenterally. Generic prescribing of drugs was comparatively lower than recommended it was 5.7%. More than 58.9% of patients were exposed to, at least two antibiotics. Broad spectrum antibiotic was prescribed in 69.3% of cases and all of the prescribed antibiotics were of the appropriate dose and interval.
