Abstract

Smart textile is a generic term for a group of materials often described as materials that can think for themselves. These materials represent the next generation of materials and they can react to stimulus from their environment. Thermochromic pigments represent to one of these materials that change shade reversibly with a relatively small change in temperature. In textile design more effort was devoted to experimenting with smart materials. Beside that, nanotechnology offer several advantages to textile finishes and printing.
So, the aim of this thesis is to combine the properties of thermochromic pigment and antibacterial effect of silver nanoparticles in one printing paste by an ecofriendly way. Then, benefit from it to produce printed designs for hospital gowns as a way to notice the high in the patient temperature.
This thesis comes in three parts:
1. General part:
It is included general information and literature surveys about
• Textile fibers (cotton, polyester, and blend cotton/PET fabrics).
• Textile printing and silk screen printing.
• Microwave in fixation of printed textiles.
• Thermochromic pigment and their applications.
• Nanotechnology, silver nanoparticles.
• Literature survey.
2. One step thermochromic pigment printing and Ag NPs antibacterial functional finishing of cotton and cotton/PET fabrics.
In this part an ecofriendly way was investigated for inclusion of thermochromic pigment printing along with antibacterial finishing into a single print paste formulation to get high quality cotton and cotton/polyester pigment prints with a remarkable antibacterial functionality against both G+ve and G-ve bacteria.
The obtained results demonstrated that:
Incorporation of the nominated Ag-NPs into thermochromic pigment printing paste is accompanied by an enhancement in colour strength, fastness properties values, along with a noticeable improvement in antibacterial functionalities.
Finally, this very simple and easy scaled up single step process can be applied to achieve functionalized textile products with outstanding performance and protection properties.
3. Designs.
In this part an innovative designs for hospital gowns have been printed by thermochromic pigments in combined with conventional pigments in an ecofriendly manner. Silk screen printing was a good method for printing thermochromic colorants.
New shade has been obtained by mixed thermochromic pigment (blue at TA 37ºC), and (Red at TA 40ºC) in equal recipes, and with other conventional pigment inks.
