Abstract

Sepsis is a clinical syndrome as a result of a dys-regulated systemic inflammatory response to infection. It is characterized by a generalized pro -inflammatory cascade, which may result in extensive injury of tissues with organ dysfunction. Our results showed that: VEGF level was statistically significant higher in sepsis when compared to SIRS or control groups. The VEGF level has a positive significant correlation with different sepsis grades; the highest was in patients with MODS followed by septic shock, severe sepsis and lastly sepsis. The SOFA score was statistically significant higher in the sepsis group when compared to the SIRS group (p = 0.003). Septic patients showed significantly lower hemoglobin, significantly higher WBC and prolonged CRP. The VEGF level is a promising biomarker for discrimination between sepsis and control groups (AUC=0.858; p=0.002; sensitivity 96.6%, specificity 75%).
