Abstract

Status epilepticus is characterized by prolonged or recurrent seizures without a return to baseline. It is a common pediatric neurological emergency with an estimated incidence of 18–23 per 100,000 children per year and a mortality of 2%–7% (Chin et al,.2006).
Our aim in this study was to evaluate the clinical and laboratory profile of status epilepticus in children at the pediatric department at sohag university hospital and the immediate outcome of these children.
This is a prospective hospital based study conducted on 100 patients who were admitted to our pediatric department over the study period. The study included 44 (44%) females and 56 (56%) males during the period from the 1st of December, 2016 to 30th of November, 2017.
We performed a clinical analysis and reviewing the data of these children
in pediatric ICUs and the emergency room who were presented with status epilepticus with special consideration for age ,sex ,family history ,past history of seizures ,Consanguinity and its degree ,duration of SE,type of seizures , medical treatment during the attack and the immediate outcome of these patients after discharge.
The patients were subjected to complete clinical examination & laboratory investigations. General, systemic and neurological examination was done to children ,all had complete laboratory investigations include; complete blood count, Serum electrolytes, Serum urea and craetinin,ABG,Serum ammonia and lactate, Extended metabolic screen,C.S.F analysis and other investigations include EEG and brain imaging(MRI/C.T brain). Finally data was analyzed by STATA version 14.2.
In this study we found that epilepsy is the most common cause of status epilpticus and those children are significantly related to the improvement and recurrence outcome.
In this study we found that in the included children, treatment with levetriacetam as first line of AED would be of useful effect and would improve the outcome.
Study Limitation:
• It is a single centered study, so the results can`t be generalized & we need multicenter studies for assessment of the clinical and the laboratory profiles of status epilepticus and the immediate outcome of the patients.
• Relatively small sample size.
Recommendation:
• Patients presented with status epilepticus should be subjected to detailed history and complete general, systemic and neurological examination on admission.
• Patients also should be subjected to detailed laboratory investigations, EEG and brain imaging.
• Rapid initiation of antiepileptic drugs help to improve the outcome of SE.
