Abstract Background: Infection is the leading cause of morbidity and the second most frequent cause of mortality among patients undergoing hemodialysis. Hemodialysis patients, as well as the dialysis staff, are vulnerable to contracting Hospital Acquired Infections. Aim: This study was designed to investigate the effect of implemented infection control training program on nurses’ performance in the hemodialysis unit. Design: A quasi-experimental design was utilized to achieve the aim of the study. Sample: It was a convenient sample consisted of 30 nurses. Setting: This study was conducted in the hemodialysis unit at Abou-hommos General Hospital, Elbehira Govemorate, Egypt. Tools: three tools were used for data collection, Infection Control Precautions questionnaire, Infection control Precautions Observational Checklist and the training program. Results: There are a highly statistically significant relation between sample nurses’ Knowledge of nosocomial infection and standard precaution and application of infection control Precautions before, immediately after the program and during the follow-up after two and four months. There are a positive moderate correlation between the sample Knowledge of infection control and their performance of infection control precautions with a highly statistically significant difference throughout the study phases. Conclusion: This study concluded that the implemented infection control precautions training program had statistically significant effect on improving nurse’s knowledge and practice. Recommendations: Similar study can be repeated by increasing the size of the sample for generalization the study. |
