Abstract Abstract This research provides a cross study of coordination particles in different contexts and from manifold perspectives. As for the context, the Glorious Qur’an is selected as it maintains the highest possible standard of rhetoric, to the extent that it is impossible to find its parallel in human works. This research deals with the different conjunctions and their influence on similar verses /mutaʃaːbihaːt/. Concerning the perspectives, coordination particles are to be studied from linguistic, rhetoric, and pragmatic points of view. This will be used to reach a part of a parameter to be applied to the assessment of the translation of meanings of the Glorious Qur’an. Problems of equivalence occur at various levels: semantic, pragmatic, socio-cultural, and grammatical differences between the source language (SL) and the target language (TL). These areas of equivalence problems are intertwined. Therefore, pragmatic and textual equivalence -based on translation of conjunctions- are to be studied from the perspectives of cohesion and implicature theory. To achieve this, the research adopts a qualitative and a quantitative analysis based on maintaining the register, observing the Cooperation Maxims, and keeping the form of /mutaʃaːbihaːt/ verses. Similar verses, /mutaʃaːbihaːt/, are selected for the corpus of the study for two main reasons. First, they may appear as an easy task for a translator, but in fact, they are not. They require a more profound research on reasons of revelation, exegesis, and other branches of knowledge. Second, the influence of coordination particles could be far-reaching on the text level. Further, translations of the meanings of the Glorious Qur’an are selected depending on the translator’s native tongue, one by a native English speaker, and the other by an Arabic native speaker, in order to assess the rhetorical question. |
