Abstract

Recently, Port-Said city with its clay soil has been largely developed industrially. This development required to construct many factories and gas plant. Heavy machinery with various types are a fundamental element at these factories which requires a support system that can resist the resulting vibrations. EPS, expanded poly-styrene geofoam in the last times appeared to be the lightweight solution for many of civil engineering problems. Construction on soft clay soil, which extends in Egypt at many zones, considered to be one of the most important problems. Geofoam has been used in a limited range of geotechnical engineering projects in Egypt. In most of these projects, geofoam is installed in direct contact with the soil. Here in this research, studying the application of EPS was presented as soil improvement technique with different methods in contact with the soil for the machines foundation under dynamic load. Firstly, different parameters of EPS are examined as clay replacement experimentally with studying the effect of the static loads in case of machinery shutdown and the dynamic loads in case of machinery working. To illustrate the effect of other parameters of EPS, the study was extended numerically by finite element analysis program, PLAXIS. A comparative between settlements in case of using EPS or not through using different cases for raft foundation has been studied. The soil improvement techniques were presented in various types added to the raft as EPS, compacted soil and piles. Moreover, the thesis studied the effect of pile types on settlement value. The results showed that using EPS decreases the settlement under machine foundation. The study proved that the change of EPS parameters has a great impact on the behavior improvement of foundation on soft clay.
