Abstract Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is a common endocrine disease in newborns and affects approximately 1 in 2000 to 4000 live births. Prevalence of permanent CH in Egypt is 1/3587 live birth. This is approximately equal to the worldwide incidence of CH. Comparing this with other international research suggests that incidence of permanent CH in Egypt was nearly half the incidence in Greek 1/1200 and Saudi Arabia (1/1400). Thyroid hormone has important effects on neural and somatic development, both during fetal life and the first years of postnatal life. Infants with congenital hypothyroidism who are not treated have disordered and delayed epiphyseal development and grow poorly, as do some infants with thyroid hormone resistance. |
