Abstract

Current study compared the efficiency of submucosal injection of dexamethasone sodium phosphate versus diclofenac sodium on complication associated with surgical removal of impacted lower third molars such as facial edema, pain and trismus.
The selected sixty patients were ASA class I who were healthy patients, free from any systemic diseases, not pregnant and hadn’t any local pathosis associated with impacted molars. Patients didn’t have any medical contraindication for using NSAIDs or CS, with winter class II &III and position B & C according to Pell & Gregory classification
Patients were distributed randomly to three equal groups according to types of drugs. group I: Dexamethasone sodium phosphate 4mg/ml vial. group II: Diclofenac sodium 75mg/3ml amp. group III: Control group inject with saline.
All surgical procedures were performed by the same surgeon. Estimate edema and trismus immediately postoperative, 48h, 7days, 2week and one month. Pain was estimated by VAS graded 0-100. Measeared trismus by intericisor distance. Edema was evaluated by straight lines from gonion to pognion, corner of mouth, ala of nose, outer angle of canthus and tragus respectively, measured by black silk 3-0.
Noteworthy reduction in postoperatively complication associated with group I was noticed. Edema in group III was greater followed by groups II then group I. Trismus in group III&II was greater than group I especially on 2nd &7th day. Pain was greater score in group III followed by II then group I.
