Abstract Breast cancer incidence is nowadays the most common cancer affecting women and the second highest cause of mortality after lung cancer. Mastectomy as a surgical treatment for breast cancer results in a permanent change to the appearance of women. The well-being of women after mastectomy is determined by how well their physical, social, psychological, emotional, and spiritual needs are being met. Aim of the study: to assess the health needs and coping strategies of women post mastectomy in Port Said hospitals. Design: A descriptive exploratory research design was used in this study. Setting: The study was conducted in outpatients of general Port Said hospital and Al Solyman hospital referred from Elmabarra health insurance. Subjects: The study comprised convenience sample (230) of all available women was included in the above mentioned setting. 180 women admitted to General Port Said hospital and 50 women admitted to Elmabarra hospital in period of 6 months. Tools of data collection: The data was collected by using interview questionnaire to assess health needs of women after mastectomy and brief coping scale to assess their coping strategies. Results: 33% of the studied women were aged between 50 and 60 years old and 40.4% of them had secondary education. Most of the studied women had satisfactory total spiritual and social needs. Also more than half of them had satisfactory total physical, psychological and informational needs and 68.3% of them had adaptive coping strategies. There was statistically significant negative correlation between their ages and their total physical, psychological, spiritual and informational needs. Also there was statistically positive correlation between women’s education and their total psychological, spiritual, social and informational needs. There was statistically significant relation between socio demographic characteristics of the studied women and their coping strategies. Conclusion: The study concluded that most of the studied women had satisfactory total physical, spiritual, psychological and social needs. Also more than half of them had satisfactory total informational needs and more than two thirds had adaptive coping strategies. Recommendations: It was recommended to apply an educational program for improving awareness of women about their health needs after mastectomy. |
