Abstract

Patient’s rights mean the rules of conduct between personnel who benefit from healthcare services and the healthcare organizations and personnel who provide them. Patient’s rights are considered third generation human rights because these rights are required only in certain circumstances in human life (Akca et al., 2015).
It means the right to be provided with the right kind of medical treatment by the right professionals at the right time using the right tools and techniques, with respect of human dignity, without any discrimination of any kind (Fernandes et al., 2014).
The specific objectives of the study were to assess the knowledge of physicians at BUH about patient’s rights using the Egyptian Hospital Accreditation Standards and to assess physicians’ practice of these rights using the previously mentioned standards from patients’ point of view. Also, to study the gap between knowledge and practice of physicians about these rights.
Subjects& Methods:
This was cross-sectional. Sampling technique for physicians was convenient sample. Four departments in the hospital were chosen as follows (General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology (O&G), Internal Medicine and Pediatrics). All physicians working in these departments for 1 year or more and accepted to participate in this study were included in the study. While sampling technique for patients was systematic random sampling (The first patient was chosen randomly and then every third patient was included). The study included those who admitted to the hospital during the period of data collection and accepted to participate in the study and not critically ill. The field of work was carried out during the period from November 2018 to February 2019.
Data were gathered using a questionnaire containing a set of questions filled out by physicians and patients themselves or completed by the researcher on behalf of patients who can’t read or write.
Results:
This study revealed that there is statistically significant difference between knowledge of physicians about patient’s rights and their practices of these rights.
from the present study, it can be concluded that 99.6% of the physicians were familiar with the term patient’s rights. And also, 97.0% of the physician has satisfactory score of knowledge about these rights.
Our study also revealed that there is statistically significant difference between physicians’ score of knowledge about patient’s rights and physicians’ different age, gender, highest qualification (p=0.012), work position, work experience and average number of working hours, while no statistically significant difference between different departments.
This study also revealed that there is low score of physicians’ practices of patient’s rights from patients’ point of view (14.7% only who have adequate score of practices of patient’s rights from patients’ point of view).
It also demonstrated that there is statistically significant difference between physicians’ score of practices of patient’s rights and patients’ different gender, educational level and department of admissionو while no statistically significant difference regarding residence or LOS.
Conclusion:
There is discrepancy between knowledge and practices of patient’s rights. As regard knowledge, almost all physicians (97.0%) has satisfactory score of knowledge. As regard practice, the majority of physician (85.3%) have inadequate score and only (14.7) of the physicians who have adequate score.
Recommendations:
1. Implement patient’s rights polices and bylaws and frequently reviewing and revising it. These policies should be clear and applicable in all hospital departments.
2. Encouraging the healthcare team to adopt and maintain these polices in daily practice.
3. Ongoing monitoring of the implementation of these polices on regular basis.
4. Creating a surveillance system to identify the obstacles in implementation of these polices as early as possible.
5. Identify a well-established strategy for dealing with these obstacles in a quick, correct and subjective manner.
6. Creating a qualified team to act as patient’s rights committee for handling all aspects related to patient’s rights.
7. Encourage healthcare team to attend training courses, workshops regarding patient’s rights.
8. Education of the patients about their rights and increasing public awareness about patient’s rights
9. Creating patient’s rights posters include items of patient’s rights standard and put it all over the hospital
