Abstract

This is a clinical study at the Endemic medicine department, Minia University Hospital and it is reviewed and approved by Research Ethics Committee (FMREC), (Faculty of Medicine, Minia University, Egypt). The present study designed to investigate the efficacy and safety of SB oral capsules in management of acute episodes of overt HE.
Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a serious complication of liver cirrhosis. It is a neuropsychological disorder due to biochemical trouble of brain function in patient with advanced liver disease. Ammonia has an essential effect in HE pathophysiology. So, agents that act on serum and tissue ammonia metabolism and excretion represent an important adjuncts to drugs that decrease the production and absorption of ammonia via GIT for overt HE patients suffering from severe or persistent symptoms.
Sodium benzoate (SB) is a low-priced adjunctive agent that can be added to lactulose and rifaximin in the management plan of HE. SB resembles an option for some refractory HE patients who are irresponsive to the standard treatment or who cannot withstand them.
• Duration of the study was 15 months (March 2017- June 2018).
• Population: patients were adults above 18 years suffering from acute episode of HE, patients were excluded from the study if they were comatosed, having renal dysfunction, elevated serum sodium level or severe ascites.
