Abstract

This investigation concerned with isolation and identification of nitrogen-fixing and hydrogen-producing bacteria and screening for their abilities to utilize waste materials as a substrate for biofuel production. Subsequent to the fermentative hydrogen production, the spent media were used as biofertilizer for enhancing growth parameters of plants. The results could be summarized as the following:
1- Twenty-six out of ninety-six bacterial isolates recovered from wastewater and soil had the potential of nitrogen fixation and hydrogen production under anaerobic condition. These bacterial species belonged to two genera, namely Enterobacter and Bacillus.
2- Nine isolates were the most active nitrogen-fixing strains and produce a higher amount of hydrogen and hence were selected for further study.
3- The results of identification by 16s rRNA analysis confirmed that: five isolates belong to the genus Enterobacter; namely, Cronobacter sakazakii (KY524290), Enterobacter aerogenes (KY549389), Enterobacter cloacae (KY524293), Enterobacter cloacae (KY524292) and Cronobacter sakazakii (KY524291) and four isolates belong to the genus Bacillus; namely, Bacillus thuringensis (MG744606). Bacillus subtilis (MG738313), Bacillus pumilus (MG738314) and Bacillus licheniformis (MG738312).
