Abstract

The present study included 70 subjects, their age ranged from 4-14years. They were divided into 2 groups:
Forty-five subjects were included in chronic telogen effluvium group whom complained from hair loss, and pull test was positive in examination, and twenty-five subjects were included in control group whom complained from hair loss, however pull test was negative in examination.
This study measured the serum ferritin level, serum zinc level, CBC, TSH, and stool analysis in children with chronic telogen effluvium and evaluated the possible association between the serum ferritin, serum zinc level and haemoglobin concentration and diffuse hair loss.
Number of anemic subjects (according to CBC), number of hair washing per week, and number of hair removed by pull test were significantly higher in telogen group than control group.
The mean serum ferritin and zinc levels were significantly lower in telogen group than control group. The number of subjects with subnormal zinc and ferritin level were higher in telogen group than control group.
Significant negative correlations were found between number of hair by pull test and serum ferritin level, zinc level, and WBCs count.Significant negative correlation was found between number of telogen hair proven by microscopic examination and serum ferritin and zinc level.
Mean number of telogen hair proven by microscopic examination and number of telogen hair removed by pull test were significantly higher in anaemic subjects than non-anaemic subjects in telogen group.
Mean number of telogen hair proven by microscopic examination and number of telogen hair removed by pull test were significantly higher in subjects with abnormal zinc level than subjects with normal zinc level in telogen.
Mean number of telogen hair proven by microscopic examination and mean number of telogen hair removed by pull test were significantly higher in subjects with abnormal Ferritin level than subjects with normal Ferritin level in telogen group.
These finding showed a strong relationship between serum ferritin, serum zinc and haemoglobin concentration and chronic telogen effluvium in children, possibly due to effect of zinc and ferritin on hair growth cycle.
