Abstract

The present study is intending to evaluate the accuracy of different imaging protocols of CBCT as an aid for assessment of root canal transportation after mechanical preparation with Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) rotary instruments. Methods: Forty freshly extracted human mandibular first molars with mesiobuccal canal curvature (20-40°) were used. Teeth were embedded in resin blocks and sectioned at two levels (2mm from the apex and at the level of curvature). Mesiobuccal canals were instrumented with the Race rotary files. Pre & post-instrumentation sections were photographed by scanning electron microscope and analyzed. Teeth were reassembled using special device and scanned by two different voxel sizes (0.1 and 0.2 mm3) using CBCT unit before and after instrumentation. Pre & post-instrumentation scans and photomicrographs were performed to compare transportation in the photomicrographs with it in the two different voxel sizes scans. Differences according to microscope and voxel sizes were assessed using Wilcoxon signed rank test.
