Abstract

This dissertation conducts a discourse analysis of Animal Farm and 1984 by George Orwell using an eclectic approach called pragma-rhetoric. Pragmatic ambivalence is employed as a tool in the pragmatic analysis of discourse. It is a discursive strategy employed by the main characters to achieve persuasive goals. Aristotle’s appeals of rhetoric are investigated in the context of political discourse of the two novels to show that pragmatic ambivalence can benefit the process of persuasion. The objectives of this dissertation are (1) to identify the different types of pragmatic ambivalence and their functions and the three traditional appeals of rhetoric and (2) to describe and analyze the way pragmatic ambivalence strategies are realized in the utterances employed by the main characters in the two novels to achieve persuasive goals in Aristotle’ appeals. This dissertation uses descriptive qualitative approach. The key instrument of the research was the researcher herself. The data is in the form of utterances which contain pragmatic ambivalence strategies and reflect rhetorical strategies quoted from the two selected novels. The results of the dissertation reveal that different types of pragmatic ambivalence; bivalence, mutivalence and discoursal, are employed successfully in the two novels to benefit the process of persuasion.
