Abstract

Introduction: Childbirth affects the body, especially the female genitalia; these changes trouble women in the resumption of sexual intercourse, where many women in postpartum suffer from several problems such as: dyspareunia, loss of desire, loss of vaginal lubrication, pain on orgasm, post coital bleeding, itching and burning, and the sexual health of women throughout pregnancy and post-delivery is often neglected by healthcare professionals in the pursuit of good obstetric outcomes. Sometimes sexual changes after childbirth cause substantial disruption in the relationship between spouses. Aim of the study: This study aimed to assess the effect of mode of delivery on couple’s sexual function. Subject and methods: Descriptive study design was utilized at Mansoura University Hospital, Mansoura city, Egypt. A purposive sample technique consisted of 150 women worked at Mansoura University Hospital (75 for each group of vaginal delivery and caesarean section) and their husbands subjects selected according to the following inclusion criteria: Mode of delivery ( vaginal only and caesarean only, healthy couples and free from sexual problems and free from chronic diseases as diabetes mellitus and cardiac diseases, Three tools were used for data collection: Tool 1: Structured Interviewing Schedule: It was developed by the researcher and divided into three parts to assess socio-demographic characteristics of the wife and the husband and reproductive history, Tool 2: Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI): It was adapted from the female sexual function index to assess sexual function of the wife, Tool 3: Male Sexual Function Questionnaire: It was developed by the researcher to assess sexual function of the husband. Results: there were statistical significant differences between modes of delivery and sexual function of the wives regarding sexual desire, sexual arousal, and orgasm and highly statistical significance difference regarding feeling difference in the vaginal opening , and there were statistical significant differences between modes of delivery and sexual function of the husbands regarding ejaculation and level of satisfaction and highly statistical significance differences regarding sexual desire and feeling difference in the vaginal opening. Recommendations: Assessing sexual function in postpartum period as a part of clinical practices within clinical settings, and address concerns, including considering the use of a brief sexual function screening questionnaire.
