Abstract There is no doubt that the diagnostic value of perioperative TEE has improved the safety of MV surgery. 2D and RT 3D TEE are complementary in diagnosing complex pathology of the MV and assessing MV repair. Advances in both surgical techniques and imaging technology have necessitated the development of a systematic transesophageal echocardiographic approach for the evaluation of mitral regurgitation. To be clinically useful, valvular abnormalities must be accurately identified and their location defined relative to fixed anatomic landmarks. Percutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty has become the first line of treatment in individuals with symptomatic rheumatic mitral stenosis. Echocardiographic imaging plays a pivotal role in both the diagnosis of mitral stenosis as well as the guidance of catheter-based procedures (e.g., PBMV) used in treatment. With the advancement of ultrasound imaging real-time 3D echocardiography offers an advantage over conventional echocardiography for the evaluation of patients being considered for percutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty and improves both short and long-term outcomes. This study reviews the practical applications and recent advances in assessment of mitral valve by Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). |
