Abstract

Asymptomatic bacteriuria is defined as, the finding of greater than (100,000) colony forming units per mL of clean catch urine specimens or one catheterization specimen. Lower colony counts in asymptomatic women usually represent contamination.
This study is across sectional observational study conducted in Assuit Woman’s Health Hospital to investigate the prevelance of asymptomatic bacteriuria among pregnant women attending antenatal clinic. A total of 250 pregnant women were included in this study during the period from November 2016 till June 2017.
After comprehensive history taking and complete physical examination, clean catch midstream urine sample had been taken for urine culture and sensitivity.
Among the 250 women included in this study, 30 women had true culture bacteriuria giving a prevalence of 12%.
The microbiology of bacteriuria in this study showed that Enterococcus was the most common pathogen (36.7% of the positive cultures) followed by E-coli and Klebsiella. The antibiotic sensitivity patterns were showed that most of the bacterial isolates were sensitive to Teicoplanin 46.7% and Imipenem 36.7%.
Teicopanin (Targocid) is glycopeptides antibiotic and is considerd category B in pregnancy.
This is the first study to evaluate the prevelance of asymptomatic bacteriuria in low risk pregnant women coming for antenatal clinc at Assuit Woman’s Health Hospital.
The sample collection and processing was meticulously performed according to guidelines of sample collection and transport. multiple antibiotics were used giving wide range of possibilities.
This study is limited by the fact that most of the patients recruited were in third trimester due to the nature of the location of the study (Tertiary care hospital).
The study didn’t include evaluation of possible risk factors of asymptomatic bacteriuria e.g. previous history of urinary tract infection.•Urine culture for asymptomatic bacteriuria should be the standard of care for evaluation of pregnant patient during antenatal care as regard presence or absence of UTI.
• Regular antenatal care and improving educational level of patients contribute in reducing obstetric morbidity resulting from undiagnosed or undertreated UTI.
• Further studies are recommended to choose suitable time for repeating screening for ASB in pregnant females to avoid missing new cases and detecting possible preventable risk factors for such condition.
