Abstract

The aim of this work is to select a welding process for given welding circumstances which were implemented in a software. Data regarding a large number of welding processes were collected and stored as a database in the software, these data were collected based on the factors that will be used in the selection. The selection method depends on two stages—exclusion and ranking stage. At exclusion stage, all welding process stored in the database will be reduced to processes which meet welding circumstances, which are part volume, material type, thickness of the part, production volume, welding position, type of joint, joint configuration, place of application and type of application, based on the data stored for welding processes with respect to these factors. These circumstances are given by the user. Second stage is selection of the optimum welding process by ranking the selected welding processes from exclusion stage based on the following selection factors—equipment cost, operator skill, equipment maintenance, surface finish, required preparation, health & safety and quality. selection methodology depends on Fuzzy-AHP-TOPSIS method. Fuzzy-AHP was used for rating criteria of selection stage according to the engineer’s opinion about the relative importance of these criteria with each other, then Fuzzy-TOPSIS was used for welding process ranking and selection based on the data stored in the database about each welding process with respect to each criterion. All the data that have been collected are in a linguistic form to correctly describe the nature of welding processes. Examples were used to demonstrate how the selection methodology works and how to deal with the selection program.
