Abstract

The present study was conducted to evaluate the clinical performance of ceramic laminate veneers of two materials named: IPS e.max CAD and Lava UltimateTM CAD/CAM.
Twenty-eight ceramic laminate veneers were fabricated to clinically restore maxillary teeth in the esthetic zone. According to the material of fabrication, the veneers were divided into two equal groups: “group A” (control group) IPS e.max CAD laminate veneers and “group B” (intervention group) Lava Ultimate laminate veneers. All teeth received a standardized preparation design with a butt joint and a chamfer finish line.
Veneers were milled using the CEREC CAD/CAM milling machine, and finished following the manufacturer’s instruction for each type of ceramic. The cementation of veneers was carried out to etched enamel surfaces following a total etch adhesive protocol.
The ceramic veneer restorations were clinically examined bimonthly for marginal adaptation, retention, fracture, marginal discoloration, and patient satisfaction according to the modified United States of Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria over a 12-month follow up period.
The results of fracture, marginal adaptation, and retention of all the veneers scaled Alpha showing no difference between the two groups. Regarding the marginal discoloration, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups. While for patient satisfaction, there was no statistically significant difference between size, gingival bleeding and flossing scores in the two groups but; Lava Ultimate showed statistically significantly higher median shape and lower median color scores than IPS e.max CAD.
Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that both IPS e.max CAD and Lava Ultimate laminate veneers revealed high successful clinical performance in terms of marginal adaptation, fracture, retention, marginal discoloration and patient satisfaction.
It can also be recommended to implement further randomized clinical studies to evaluate the clinical survival rate of the LavaTM Ultimate laminate veneers over a more prolonged follow up periods.
