Abstract

The present thesis is an attempt to evaluate the translations of two famous novels by Naguib Mahfouz. This thesis attempts to explore problems of literary translation from Arabic into English. It seeks to investigate some aspects of culture and style in ”Allis Wal Kilab” and ”Assyman Wal Kharif ” by Naguib Mahfouz and their English translations by Trevor Le Gassick (with M.Badawi) and Roger M.A.Allen, respectively. The aim is to assess how much of the style and culture of the original has been preserved. The thesis is also concerned with some problems, including fronting and postposition, syntactic errors and real vs.figurative meanings. It also tackles the variance between literal and communicative translations. Objective judgment about a literary translation is not possible. That is mainly because philological studies have proved to be weak in not providing methods of practical analysis. It is also because of the nature of language itself. The main concern of this study is to provide a set of norms for achieving the best translation .The translator’s task is twofold: first, he has to translate.Second, he has to give his English reader some impression of the flavor of the original text. Not only is the literary translator required to transmit a basic message but also to make his own text reflect the figurative density and complexity of the original work. In this study, the researcher analyzes some of the ways in which this dual task is realized. The thesis will review different views of evaluating translation. Then, it goes to tackle semantic problems, cultural problems and formal problems successively.Chapter one is an introduction. Chapter two is a review of the literature.Chapter three deals with problems such as misunderstanding and inaccuracy.Chapter four presents cultural issues concerning the translation of idiomatic and cultural expressions such as proverbs and local collocations.Chapter five tackles formal and grammatical problems. Finally, the conclusion presents the findings of the whole thesis.
