Abstract

This study has been conducted to predict some water quality parameters (TDS, BOD, DO, Fe and COD) through El-Salam canal in Egypt using regression based models using monthly data collected during the period 2003-2013. Based on the results of this work, the followings may be concluded:
 The developed regression based models obtained for the purposes of this research performed well in predicting the examined water quality parameters (ie.TDS, BOD, COD, DO and Fe) along canal system.
 Two main scenarios (water quality improvement and deterioration) were tested in order to estimate the optimum mixing ratio of drainage to fresh water for the environmental management of El-Salam project without exceeding the water quality threshold limits (1000 mg/l for TDS, 15 mg/l for BOD, 25 mg/l COD, 5 mg/l for DO and 1.0 mg/l for Fe).
 Concerning TDS, the obtained results indicate that increasing the discharges to ESCP from Farsqur drain up to 75% or increasing from Lower Serw or Hadus drains up to 85% (if needed/available) assuming having their current levels of TDS concentrations will not significantly deteriorate the canal water. In these cases, TDS concentrations at ESL07 will be around 1000 mg/l.
 Concerning BOD, it is possible to increase the discharges from Farsqur, El-Serw or Hadus drains to ESCP up to 85% (if needed/available) assuming having their current levels of BOD concentrations. In these cases, BOD concentrations at ESL07 will be very near to 15 mg/l.
 DO concentrations at ESL07 will remains in all cases between 3.0 to 5.0 mg/l. This means that increasing the discharges to ESCP from Farsqur drain up to 75% or increasing from Lower Serw or Hadus drains up to 85% (if needed/available) assuming having their current levels of DO concentrations will not significantly deteriorate the canal water.
 The results also indicate that increasing the discharges from Farsqur (EF01) , Lower Serw (ES02) or Hadus (ESL03) drains to ESCP up to 85 % more than their current means (2003 - 2013) (if needed/available) assuming having their current levels of Fe concentrations, This will not significantly deteriorate the canal water. Fe concentrations at ESL07 will remains in all cases less than or equal 1.0 mg/l.
 The COD concentrations at ESL07 were less than 25.0 (mg/l) for all cases of scenarios A and B. This may indicate the possibility for increasing the discharges from Farsqur , El-Serw or Hadus drains up to 85 % more than their current means (2003 - 2013) to ESCP (if needed/available) assuming current levels of COD concentrations are maintained.
