Abstract

The implementation of a planned health teaching model in patients receiving chemotherapy can mitigate the side effects of chemotherapy, and thus can improve their compliance with treatment. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of implementing a health teaching module on the severity of chemotherapy side effects for non hodgkin’s lymphoma patients. Methods: A quasi experimental (study control) research design was utilized. The study was carried out in the Oncology Institute in Damietta City (inpatient and outpatient). Sample: The data were collected from 80 adult patients with non hodgkin lymphoma of both sexes. The subjects were selected on the basis of who corresponded to the inclusion criteria. Then they were divided into two groups. Tools: Two tools were applied in this study (An interview questionnaire sheet and a health problems assessment tool, used to assess the presence, the severity of chemotherapy side effects and actions taken to overcome them). The result reveals that there was an increased total knowledge score regarding the disease, chemotherapy and its side effects of patients in the study group compared to that of the control group at both posttest and follow up phases. Furthermore, there were statistically significant decreases in the severity of chemotherapy side effects in the study group compared to that of the control group with a p value<0.001** .Conclusion: The implementation of a health teaching module on chemotherapy side effects has a positive effect on the patients’ total knowledge scores regarding chemotherapy. Unquestionably, it helped them to alleviate the severity of chemotherapy side effects.
