Abstract

This study was conducted on 16 patients suffering from recurrent TMJ dislocation divided equally and randomly into two groups according to the site of injection. group I comprised 8 patients were treated using Prolotherapy 2ml of 25% dextrose solution injected into posterior periarticular tissues. group II comprised 8 patients were treated using Prolotherapy 2ml of 25% dextrose solution injected into Superior joint space. All patients in both groups were given acetaminophen to control postinjection pain and were instructed to avoid ice application and antiinflammatory drugs for first 2 weeks post-injection. Both groups were evaluated clinically pre-injection and at 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months post-injection follow up periods regarding inter incisal mouth opening, VAS and frequency of TMJ dislocation. The results revealed slight decrease in maximal mouth opening in both groups with no statistically significant difference between the two groups, this limitation improved after 1 month. Regarding VAS patients in both groups reported pain only in first 2 weeks with maximal peek of pain at first 2 days with statistically significant difference between the two groups (more pain at group II). All patients in both groups were satisfied by the results after injection as there was improvement regarding dislocation frequency after single injection except case no (6) in group I and cases no (3, 4, 5) in group II where they experience another episodes of dislocation at 2weeks follow up period and needed second injection.
