Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate calcium and phosphorus ions release, solubility and bioactivity of resin modified glass ionomer cement before and after addition of bioactive glass nanoparticles 45S5.One commercially available RMGI was used in this study: chemically cured RMGI cement (Rely X). In the present study, a total number of 158 samples were prepared; fifty samples (10 for each group ) for compressive strength test which was performed to select the optimum two concentrations from the four concentrations (2%,5%,10%,15%) of BAG added to RMGI cement using a universal testing machine at a cross-head speed of 1min/mm. 21 samples (7 for each group) for calcium and phosphorus-ions release test using Inductively Coupled Plasma/Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (ICP/AAS) after 7 days and 30 days. 21 samples (7 for each group) for solubility test according to the ANSI/ADA specification No.66-1989 for Glass ionomer cements with slight modification in the samples ‘dimensions as suggested by Carvalho-Junior et al after 7 days and 30 days. 12 samples (4 for each group) for bioactivity test which was investigated by evaluating the apatite formation on the material disks in the presence of a phosphate buffered saline (PBS) by Scanning Electron Microscope (Field Emission Gun) attached with Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis Unit EDXA after 7 days and 30 days. All samples were prepared according to manufacturer’s instructions using split teflon molds with different dimensions according to each test specifications: The solubility, calcium and phosphorus ions release, bioactivity test samples were prepared with dimensions of (7.75mm x 1.5mm) then stored for 7 and 30 days till being tested, the compressive strength test samples were prepared with dimensions of (4mm x 6mm). |
