Abstract

The liver is considered one of the largest organs in the human body, it has many vital roles in metabolism, detoxification of xenobiotic and energy generation. Liver disease is a major cause of illness and death worldwide. As result of the side effects of drugs used to treat liver diseases and injuries, there is a great tendency towards the use of natural anti-oxidants.
Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is a strong hepatotoxin inducing hepatic necrosis, commonly used in experimental models for initiation of acute and chronic liver damage.
The current study aim to investigate the protective effect of hesperidin, taurine alone and in combination with each other on liver damage induced by CCl4.
Ninety male rats were randomly distributed into nine equal groups as follows: G1:control, G2: corn oil, G3: CCl4, G4: Hes/CCl4, G5: Tau/CCl4, G6: Hes+Tau/CCl4 (protective groups), G7: CCl4/Hes, G8: CCl4/Tau, G9: CCl4/Hes+Tau (therapeutic groups).
