Abstract

The target of this study was to survey Bani-Sweif governorate to record the moss flora.
To achieve this aim, eight trips were made from 5/2/2015 to 20/12/2016 to four marakez of Bani-Sweif governorate and 400 samples were collected but 154 pure specimens were examined.
This work includes:
 Previous works on bryoflora of Bani-Sweif governorate and Nile valley.
 Methods for dealing and examination of samples.
 Identification keys for genera and species of each genus in Bani-Sweif governorate.
 Photographs of all anatomical structures and morphological characters of all identified species.
 Detailed description of all genera and species.
 Distribution of these species in different phytogeographical territories of Egypt, Sub-Saharan Africa, Nile basin countries and in the entire World.
 This study revealed:
 The examined 154 pure specimens included five families namely Bryaceae, Funariaceae, Splachnobryaceae, Splachnaceae and Pottiaceae, 15 genera and 27 species.
 The most occurred family was Pottiaceae as it included seven genera and 12 species and Bryaceae having three genera and ten species.
 21 taxa out of 27 records were present in Nile basin countries which show the effect of Nile currents which carry diaspores to Bani-Sweif.
 Afr2 and Am2 were the most similar geographical regions with identified taxa.
 The most occurred taxa were Funaria hygrometrica as it recurred 70 times followed by Barbula unguiculata 50 times.
 The largest genus was Bryum, represented by seven species, namely Bryum gemmiparum, B. klinggraeffii, B. kunzei, B. microerythrocarpum, B. radiculosum, B. ruderale and B. subapiculatum.
 The second largest genus was Didymodon as it represented by four species, namely, Didymodon luridus, D. sinuosus, D. spadiceus and D. tophaceus.
 The smallest genera were Bryoerythrophyllum, Entosthodon, Funaria, Gymnostomum, Oxystegus, Physcomitrium, Ptychostomum, Splachnobryum and Tayloria as they represented once.
 Sporophytes were found 17 times in two species; 16 in Funaria hygrometrica and one in Entosthodon obtusus.
 Archegonia were found in three taxa, namely, Anoectangium handelii, Funaria hygrometrica and Gymnostomum calcareum.
 Antheridia were found twice in two taxa, namely, Brachymenium exile and Funaria hygrometrica.
 Rhizoidal gemmae were recorded from four taxa, namely, Bryum klinggraeffii, Bryum microerythrocarpum, Bryum radiculosum and Bryum ruderale.
 Axillary gemmae were recorded once in Barbula indica.
 Previously, three taxa were recorded in Bani-Sweif governorate namely, Barbula bolleana, Barbula indica and Barbula unguiculata.
 This work added:
 Two taxa namely, Tayloria lingulata and Trichostomum planifolium were new record to North Africa and all Africa, they were found in America 2, Asia 2 and Europe.
 Six taxa of the new records to Egypt were found in Nile basin countries and Sub-Saharan Africa which explain the role of Nile in transferring diaspores of moss taxa.
 Eight taxa as new records to Egypt namely, Brachymenium abyssinicum, Bryoerythrophyllum inaequalifolium, Bryum klinggraeffii, Bryum microerythrocarpum, Oxystegus tenuirostris, Physcomitrium spathulatum, Tayloria lingulata and Trichostomum planifolium, which increased the number of moss taxa in Egypt from 186 to 194.
 21 taxa as new records to Nile Valley which increased the number of moss taxa from 18 to 39 which exceeds the moss number in Nile Delta with three taxa.
 25 taxa as new record to Bani-Sweif governorate which increased the number of moss taxa from three to 28 in Bani-Sweif.
