Abstract

Background: Parvovirus B19 is the etiological agent of erythema infectiosum in children, and frequently cause transient red cell aplasia in chidren with chronic hemolytic anemias like thalassemia syndrome.
Objective: To detect the prevalence of Parvovirus B19 infection in multitransfused beta-thalassemia major patients at Pediatric Department of Fayoum university hospital in the period from July till November 2013, through the detection of its specific IgM and IgG in their sera by ELISA.
Methodology: This study enrolled upon 55 children aged from 2-16 years; all of them have transfusion dependent beta thalassemia major and are reciving medical care at Pediatric Department of Fayoum University hospital in the period from July till November 2013. All patients were subjected to full medical history, clinical examination and laboratory investigations including complete blood count, reticlocytic count, BUN, serum creatinin, ALT, AST, HBsAg, anti-HCV, anti- B19 IgM and anti- B19 IgG.
Results: Anti-B19 IgM antibodies were detected in 14.5% while anti-B19 IgG antibodies were detected in 21.8% of transfusion dependent thalassemic patient.
Conclusion: B19 infection is detected in high rates among children with beta thalassemia major , so we must consider this possibility specially when thalassemic child develop sudden dropping in hemoglobin and reticulocytopenia.
