Abstract

Patient safety is an essential and vital component of healthcare quality. Nursing staff face many challenges in today’s healthcare environment in trying to keep patients safety. Empowering work environments for nursing staff has a potential to improve work effectiveness as reflected in patient outcomes while at the same time, enhancing the nursing staff’s engagement in empowering behaviors that lead to quality care for patients and job satisfaction for nurses. The aim of the present study is to assess work empowerment and patient safety culture among nursing staff. The study was conducted in medical department at Tanta Main University Hospital. The study subjects consisted of all (175) available nursing staff working at Tanta Main University Hospital that involved 175 nursing staff. Data of the present study were collected using two tools hospital survey on patient safety culture questionnaire and the conditions for work effectiveness questionnaire Results of present study revealed that: High percent (65.14%) of nursing staff had low level of perception regarding work empowerment. While nearly one third of them (32.5%,2.2%) had moderate level of perception regarding work empowerment. The majority (84.57%) of nursing staff had moderate level of perception regarding patient safety culture. While, low percent of them (11.4%) had moderate level of perception regarding to patient safety culture. There is no statically significant between personal characteristics (age, qualifications and years of experiences) and work empowerment. There is no statically significant between personal characteristics and patient safety culture except qualifications of nursing staff at P< 0.05. There is highly positive correlation between patient safety culture and work empowerment at P< 0.05. Based on the results of this study, it is recommended to ensure nurses’ participation in decision making, giving them more chances to voice their personal opinions to access formal power, create a motivating work environment, keeping open lines of communication through periodical staff meeting and treating them with respect, Create a non-punitive environment and blame-free culture in which nursing staff are prepared to report their errors and nearmisses.
