Abstract

Inguino-scrotal swellings are one of the commonest anomalies in pediatric age groups. Most of them are related to the abnormalities of descent of testis and failure of obliteration of processus vaginalis. Among these, the most common congenital anomalies are inguinal hernia and hydrocele.
The reported incidence of IH varies from 3% to5% in full-term newborns, 13% among newborns less than 33 weeks of gestational age , and 30% in infants of less than 1000 g birth weight . Males have much more incidence to develop IH with a male/female ratio of 3:1 and 10:1.
Proponents of contralateral exploration of the asymptomatic side the high incidence of bilaterality and a 29% incidence of developing a symptomatic hernia on the unexplored side. Opponents state that the true incidence of bilateral disease is between 5.6% and 15% and suggest that 82% of contralateral explorations are useless.
Our study assessed: The statistical data on incidence of clinically non-evident hernia in unilateral hernia, and Role of age, site of hernia and gender in discovering the clinically non-evident hernia.
Inguinal hernia in pediatric age group is mostly diagnosed by pediatrician and pediatric surgeons on the basis of history (given by the parents) and clinical examination of the child. Investigations are mainly done to rule out the associated anomalies.
This is a prospective study that has been held in pediatric Surgery unit , Minia University Hospital on 100 patients had unilateral congenital hernia February 2016 and February 2018. Informed consents from parents of all patients have been taken before entering the study.
