Abstract El-Hammam area is located in the NWCE with an area of about 234137 feddan. It lies between these coordinates 29° 15‘ to 29° 30‘ E and 30° 45‘ to 31° N. It falls along the Mediterranean coast of Egypt. The main objectives of this work were to: 1) estimate the changes in agricultural lands and water features in El-Hammam area from 1987 to 2017 using remotely sense data and GIS techniques; 2) evaluate land capability of the studied soils for agricultural production; 3) evaluate quality of water resources for crop irrigation; and 4) evaluate suitability of the studied soils for some field, vegetable and fruit crops. . For these purposes, Landsat data were collected at four periods of time (1987, 2001, 2007 and 2017). Also, 16 representative and geo-referenced soil-profiles were dug within the studied area. The obtained results indicated a significant increase in agricultural areas; Areas of water bodies were also increased. Soils in the studied area are gravelly coarse-textured soils. The studied soils were moderately alkaline. The studied soils were non-saline. Most of these restrictions can be controlled through the application of proper fertility and land management practices. |
