Abstract The motive for writing this dissertation is to highlight Beth Henley’s depiction of the theme of self-discovery while breaking away from the traditional concept of naturalism. First, the dissertation explores how Henley’s naturalistic plays depict the relation between the inner self and the surrounding world. The magical moments that Henley’s characters experience come only after the discovery of their real selves. Then, the dissertation proves how Beth Henley moves away from the traditional concept of naturalism. Henley’s characters are victimized by their nature. |
